Non-human Primate Species: Alternate Preclinical Research Model for Reproductive Biology Research

Background

Non-human primates resemble humans closely in their testicular and ovarian development. Organ-specific physiology and functional features of non-human primates are identical to humans. Different species like Macaques, Marmosets, and other monkey species show partial resemblance to humans, and may be suitable for answering specific research questions.

Learning Outcome (LO)

  • LO #1: Animal models are used for preclinical research applications like transplantation and grafting studies. A comparison of various physiological and functional features of specific primate species with humans will be performed. Why do we need Non-human Primates for research?
  • LO #2: How can we apply principles of 3Rs to minimize use of non-human primate models for research?
