Analysing Pendulum Motion: Characteristics, Constants, Periodicity, and Clock Dynamics

Background

Pendulum clocks are fascinating objects, and the pendulum’s motion inside the clock determines the second hand’s tick of the clock. The pendulum’s motion is distinct and is different from the everyday motion we encounter. It is periodic, that is the motion repeats itself after a fixed interval. We can observe this periodicity in position, velocity, kinetic energy, as well as the potential energy of the system. We can find the equation of motion i.e., the position as a function of time utilizing the periodic functions that we know. So, we will be able to determine the relevant quantities like velocity, kinetic energy, and the potential energy as a function of time.

Learning Outcome (LO)

  • LO #1: Characterizing a simple harmonic motion using plain observation and determining the characteristic constants.
  • LO #2: Using the parameters to find the equation of motion.
  • LO #3: Relating pendulum’s motion to the pendulum clock.
