Forest Guardians: AI Detects Deforestation to Save the Planet
Background
This project empowers students to explore artificial intelligence (AI) and data science while addressing the pressing challenge of deforestation. With ongoing forest loss threatening ecosystems and exacerbating climate change, effective monitoring of large, forested areas is crucial. Students will develop an AI system that analyzes satellite imagery to detect patterns of deforestation. This initiative supports forest conservation efforts and aims to mitigate the adverse effects of deforestation on biodiversity and climate stability.
Learning Outcome (LO)
- LO #1: Understanding AI in Environmental Conservation
Gain insights into how AI and machine learning algorithms can be utilized for environmental monitoring, particularly in identifying changes in forest cover using satellite imagery. - LO #2: The Impact of Deforestation on Climate Change
Learn about the relationship between deforestation and rising greenhouse gas emissions. Explore the necessity for real-time detection of deforestation events to combat climate change effectively. - LO #3: Practical Skills in Remote Sensing and Data Analysis
Develop hands-on experience in collecting and preprocessing satellite data. Learn to build and evaluate AI models that can accurately detect deforestation patterns, enhancing your data analysis skills.
