Graphene Filtration: Unlocking a New Era in Water Purification

The global water crisis necessitates innovative solutions, and graphene’s remarkable properties offer a promising approach to water purification. This project will explore the fundamental properties of graphene that make it suitable for filtering contaminants from water. Students will investigate how graphene is synthesized, the physical and chemical properties that enhance its effectiveness in water treatment, and its limitations.

Learning Outcome (LO)

  • LO#1: Understand the basic principles of water filtration and purification, including common contaminants and their removal processes. 
  • LO#2: Learn about the intrinsic properties of graphene, such as its mechanical strength, permeability, and chemical resistance, and how these properties contribute to its effectiveness in water filtration.
  • LO#3: Investigate the limitations of graphene filtration systems, including cost, environmental impact, and performance under different processing conditions.
