Gravitational Waves: Unlocking the Mysteries of the Universe
inPhysics
Background
Gravitational waves are ripples in spacetime that offer a revolutionary way to explore the universe. This project will guide students through the concepts of gravitational waves, focusing on the events that generate them, particularly black hole mergers. Students will learn about the connection between gravitational forces, light energy, and black hole formation, including the significance of the Schwarzschild radius in the life cycle of stars.
Learning Outcome (LO)
- LO#1: Understand the basic principles of gravitational waves, including their origins and implications in astrophysics.
- LO#2: Learn about black hole formation, the Schwarzschild radius, and how gravitational forces affect a star during its collapse.
- LO#3: Gain insights into how black hole mergers generate gravitational waves and their detection methods.
