Monocrystalline Silicon Solar Cells: Efficiency, Challenges, and Environmental Impact

Background

Monocrystalline silicon is the most widely used material for solar cells due to its high efficiency, but it also comes with significant production challenges and cost barriers. This project will help students explore how monocrystalline silicon solar cells work, the challenges in their manufacturing process, and the environmental impact of solar panel waste. They will also investigate sustainable methods of disposal and what more can be done to reduce e-waste. 

Learning Outcome (LO)

  • LO#1: Understand how monocrystalline silicon solar cells convert sunlight into electricity. 
  • LO#2: Explore the technical challenges and cost barriers involved in producing monocrystalline silicon solar cells.
  • LO#3: Learn about the environmental impact of e-waste from solar panels, particularly focusing on end-of-life disposal issues.
