Quantum Scattering in Plasmas: Ultracold vs. High-Energy Density

Background

The HEDPs show quantum effects in the calculation of electron-atom interaction cross-section. Several works of Rosmej et al, Karakhtanov et al, and Ramazanov et al showed the effect of quantum mechanical scattering on the transport properties of the plasma (mostly noble gas plasmas). This calculation for UCPs has not be done by the researchers as it is dilute. The Hydrodynamical equations used in the UCPs are not able to explain several phenomena like electron evaporation and ionisation in an Ultracold plasma. The quantum mechanical scattering cross-section gives insights into the underlying atomic processes, thus goes beyond the classical dynamics of electron-atom interaction in an electromagnetic field and/or statistical methods of dealing with such systems.

Learning Outcome (LO)

  • LO #1: Electron-atom interaction in HEDP medium as against the electron-atom interaction in UCP medium.
  • LO #2: Effect of electron-atom interaction in the dynamics of UCP medium. How does it affect the ionisation, plasma oscillation, coupling parameter and screening parameter of a UCP.
